A native of Pennsylvania, Dick was a State High School Wrestling Champion at Waynesburg High School. He started his coaching career in wrestling and football at Port Huron Northern High School in 1965. His wrestling teams had a dual meet record of 220 wins and 57 losses. In football coaching, his specialty was defense. His 1986-87 team was 9-0 and set numerous PHN defensive records.
